Thanks for the exceptional watchlist recommendations. Katrina was a watershed moment on many levels. The city's vibrancy and heart, however, remain intact.

My Katrina memory is of a video documentarian who left us because he was so despondent after the hurricane. Stevenson Palfi made a marvelous video, Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together. He got Professor Longhair, Tuts Washington, and Allen Toussaint together to prepare a public appearance. Professor Longhair died a few days before the appearance.

Palfi decided to continue production. He had recorded a long fascinating practice session with the three. The documentary also developed into a memorial of Professor Longhair. It was produced by Mississippi ETV.

I worked with Palfi on distribution. He was not a fun boss, but I respected his talent and love for New Orleans. It’s so sad that he was another victim of Hurricane Katrina.

Mayree, I am a long time fan of the film and am proud my co-curator and I programmed it for the Katrina series. This film was especially important for me to include as Palfi’s story and love for New Orleans are quite memorable. Those who survived after the storm carry the weight. I am thinking so much of you!!!

I’m so happy to see it on the MOMA list, which is so juicy. So many varied shows. I bet it was fun to discuss possible entries!

I appreciate the (‘once-in-a lifetime’) call-out. I used that language when reasoning with an elder in NOLA, and he quickly reminded me that it ain’t ‘once-in-a lifetime.’ In fact, you know it’s going to happen, you just don’t know when. I should’ve know better having the perspective of sitting through hurricanes in the Caribbean. It will happen. Thanks for sharing this!

What a great watchlist - thank you so much for this. I'm adding to my queue right now.

If you ever want to chat about Louisiana film, maybe we can schedule something up. I just wrote about the obscure/recent silent film 'Louis' over at Big Easy Magazine. Check it out and let me know your thoughts. Thanks again ⚜️🍿 https://bigeasymagazine.com/2025/08/04/celebrating-the-legacy-of-louis-armstrong-with-an-obscure-movie/
