James Baldwin was an outstanding elementary student at P.S. 24 where I taught fourth grade, second grade and third grade in the late 1960’s prior to the school’s demise enabling yours truly to film Harlem School 1970 at C.S. 30 the following year.

Still in a holding pattern with Bret and Kino after so enthusiastically embracing my 55 year old peerless time capsule documenting Harlem Life . So much unique material offered. Non-plused at the moment.

A little “sqeek” from you much appreciated.

Dear Maya,

I’m genuinely surprised at the question of “Are Black films far too traumatic?” It seems posed by those who lack knowledge of the history of Black people. I understand the desire to distance one’s self from hurt but in doing so one misses so much profound beauty. A beauty that could only be born from such pain. I honor and respect my people too much. I marvel at the resilience of Black people. I want the pleasure and the pain. I want the fullness.

Sincerely,

Joshua

joshua, thank you always for being a deeply compassionate reader. i, of course, agree with you but the goal of a teacher— in any capacity— is to guide people to new knowledge with care. i hope to have done that here and every capacity i occupy. ❤️ hope you’re taking genuine care always

What makes a film “Black?” Was “Putney Swope” a “Black Film” even though the director Robert Downey, Sr. was “white?” Is a film “Black” because it stars Black actors or is it more aptly described as “White film in Blackface?”

hi walter! for the purposes of Black Film Archive, a black film is defined as a film with something significant to say about the Black experience…

There have been a slew of modern Black box office failures. Who (or what) will solve Black cinema’s (marketing) crisis?

How many film productions are following Sinners guidelines?

What is up with all the trauma in Black film/media?

I ask anyone Black who feels to much trauma is in Black media, what books with stories with Black heroes in mythical or fantastical ways written by Black people were available in their home as kids growing up?

Why do we need sex on screen?

The question I always have to any who question allusions to fornication is, what is wrong with allusions, including lustful ones,  to fornication?
