Another outstanding list! Thanks for your tireless work and sacrifice to preserve an overlooked yet critical part of our collective cinematic history. Congrats on the move. ๐
Trust you are enjoying your move to Los Angeles. At one time I lived in West Hollywood and Beverly Hills for six years.
Would have loved to see HARLEM SCHOOL 1970 as one of your 28! A black childrenโs world time capsule filmed 55 years ago. Again, thank you for your last years introduction to Bret Wood and Kino Lorber.
For the future, a factual statistic. I filmed HALREM SCHOOL 1970 during the Spring of 1970. It has a copyright date of 1970 and renewal 2017. The restoration of HARLEM SCHOOL 1970 in 2017 and its subsequent World Premiere screening at The Paley Center for Media occurred in February 2018, and subsequent screenings at festivals and seminars shortly after culminating with the following seminar screening at the Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem one year ago this Friday, March 14, 2024.
Maya here is a video of that seminar.
Wishing you ALWAYS your shining making a difference contributions to young minds as well as old...as only you can accomplish.
Best,
Phil

Per usual, your writing is intimate and inspiring. Thank you for all you do and the invitation to engage with art. This collection is gloriously curated. Wishing you peace and prosperity.
I Am Alone is a positively fantastic film about The Greatest... "The little boy disagreed with Ali, and said: 'No, Muhammad. Iโm going to meet God, and Iโm gonna tell Him that I know you.'" A story about Ali's heart, and how he put it to use. https://thegoldenmean2040.substack.com/p/the-heart-of-muhammad-ali
Wonderful list of Black films. I will share it with everyone. Great to see Top of the Heap on there. That flick is wild. One day when I get my thoughts together I'm going to write an essay about it. Here is one you might dig on Cornbread, Earl & Me, another favorite I saw when it was released at the now gone Harlem theater The Tapia: https://crimereads.com/ronald-fair-hog-butcher-cornbread-earl-me/

Maya, where are you living in LA?
I went to UCLA in the 1960โs when Hollywood was HOLLYWOOD. Some of my cinematography teachers were Haskell Wexler, Conrad Hall and Floyd Crosby.
Best always,
Phil
