Great essay, makes me think...but also despair. What can we do? Art, film, and literature are necessary and helpful but seem passive. The protests seem misdirected. Writing and calling the same useless politicians that fail at running the country? And what of our own everyday dramas and traumas?
barron, that's a very interesting point that i want to handle with care. in my opinion, there is not one role people play in a revolution. i believe it depends on us to use our gifts to make revolutionary change enticing. writers should write, painters should paint, sculptures should sculpt. but i think the time of "or" is over. if we want people to be moved to action, we cannot assume there is one ~true~ way that will get them there. but, to your point, i think the time of "or" is behind us; we are in the time of AND. artists should do their art AND advocate in every way possible. it takes us all using our gifts and being courageous enough to find other ways. but i do not think artmaking shrinks into nothingness, it is not a passive sport, we can see artistry in everything... which means, perhaps, it is everything.
After contemplating this piece, I’m struck by it’s importance and how you managed to meet this moment with intellectualism and humanity. Ultimately, I want to stand in righteousness and on the side of freedom. It’s discourse like this that fortifies me for navigating the world. This work, this archive and its community are vital resources for interpreting the past and the future.
